Supermarket Beef Offers This Week 2019

For many Australians, grocery shopping often involves a quick stop at the meat aisle to stock up on meals for the week. It's for this reason that our big supermarket chains are competing fiercely to offer the best quality meats at the most competitive prices. Despite this, there is often a minimal difference in actual costs, so Canstar Blue's annual review aims to flesh out which supermarket chain is really winning the 'meat wars' when it comes to customer satisfaction.

To do this, we surveyed more than 6,000 Australian adults to find out which, if any, supermarket label meat products they had purchased and eaten in the preceding four weeks. Survey respondents who qualified to take part in the research (6,010) were then invited to identify and score their purchased product(s) on a scale of 0 to 10 for overall satisfaction, while feedback was also recorded on freshness, taste, and value for money.

Our 2021 customer satisfaction survey saw a whopping 23 different meat categories reviewed and rated, covering beef, chicken, lamb, pork, and seafood. The results are found below. Each supermarket must have received a minimum of 30 survey responses in each meat category to be included in the final results. Coles, Woolworths and ALDI feature in most of the categories, while IGA and Costco only made the cut in some.

Before we dive into which supermarkets rated best for meat and seafood, here are some meaty facts, as found in our survey:

• Aussies spend on average $41 per week on meat (including seafood) at the supermarket
• 27% of people surveyed try to purchase ethically sourced meat (i.e. free-range chicken, grass-fed beef, etc.) and another 27% prefer to purchase meat from a supermarket rather than a butcher
• Over a third of Aussies (37%) would eat more seafood or fish if it was less expensive
• Nearly a quarter (24%) buy meat in bulk (i.e. to freeze for later, etc.)
• 15% have been disappointed with the quality of the meat they purchased

ALDI was rated the undisputed champion of supermarket beef for the FOURTH year in a row!

Beef Sausages ─ ALDI

ALDI has won the battle of the beef snags for four years running, outscoring Coles, Woolworths and IGA to take out the top spot once more. ALDI received five-star reviews in most categories including – taste, value for money and overall satisfaction. Notably, IGA was the only supermarket to receive five stars for freshness, while Coles and Woolworths also scored full marks for taste. Coles came in second place, with IGA ranked third and Woolworths fourth for overall satisfaction.

Beef Mince – Coles

One of the most competitive meat categories, the title of beef mince king went to Coles in 2021. The supermarket cooked up five-star reviews for taste, freshness and overall satisfaction. Meanwhile, runner-up ALDI beat all supermarkets on value for money and also ranked ahead of Woolworths and IGA for overall satisfaction with four stars.

Beef Burgers ─ ALDI

This year, ALDI took out the award in the battle of the burgers, scoring five stars across most research categories, namely for freshness, value for money and overall satisfaction. Woolworths ranked second with five stars for taste and freshness and Coles third with top marks for taste. Both major supermarkets ended on four stars for overall satisfaction. IGA didn't receive the minimum required survey sample size to feature in this category for 2021.

Beef Steak ─ ALDI & Coles

ALDI & Coles were joint winners for beef steaks in 2021, our latest research found. This is the fourth year in a row that ALDI has topped this category, scoring five stars across almost all variables, including freshness, value for money and overall satisfaction. Coles was on par with full marks for taste, freshness and overall satisfaction. Meanwhile, IGA and Woolworths finished third and fourth respectively, although Woolies did score five stars for taste and freshness.

Beef Roast ─ ALDI

The title of top Sunday beef roast went to ALDI in 2021, ahead of Coles in second spot and Woolworths. ALDI earned top marks in all rated categories, while Coles and Woolworths rated four stars and three stars respectively overall. IGA didn't receive the minimum required survey sample size to feature in this category.

Chicken Award Winner – ALDI

Winner winner chicken dinner! ALDI won Canstar Blue's Most Satisfied Customer Award for chicken in 2021, plucking Coles from the top spot.

Chicken Breast ─ ALDI

One of the most hotly-contested categories, the chicken breast award went to… ALDI (for the fourth consecutive year)! The budget supermarket earned five stars across all categories such as taste, freshness, value for money and overall satisfaction. IGA also managed to receive full marks for taste, but landed on four stars for overall satisfaction, alongside Coles. Woolworths was rated three stars for overall satisfaction.

Chicken Mince ─ ALDI

ALDI finished ahead of rival supermarkets Coles and Woolworths for its chicken mince, rating five stars for taste, freshness, value for money, and overall satisfaction. Likewise, Coles did also receive top marks for taste and freshness, but landed on four stars for overall satisfaction, while Woolworths got three stars. IGA didn't receive the minimum required survey sample size to feature in this category in 2021.

Chicken Burgers ─ Coles

Coles was rated the real supermarket chicken burger king with five-star reviews in all categories. Runner-up ALDI also rated five stars for value for money, alongside Woolworths which also got full marks for taste. IGA didn't receive the minimum required survey sample size to feature in this category.

Chicken Sausages – Coles

Coles topped the chicken sausages category with five stars for freshness, value for money, and overall satisfaction, while rival supermarket Woolworths also scored top marks for taste, bang for buck, and freshness. ALDI and IGA didn't receive the minimum required survey sample size to feature in this category in 2021.

Chicken Wings –ALDI

ALDI took out the win for the best chicken wings in 2021, with a perfect five-star score across the board, while Coles was rated four stars overall and Woolworths received three stars for overall satisfaction. IGA didn't receive the minimum required survey sample size to feature in this category in 2021.

Chicken Thighs – ALDI

There was no 'thighs' race here, with ALDI rating best for chicken thighs. The discount supermarket earned full marks in all categories, while Coles finished second with a solid four stars across the board and Woolworths third with three stars overall. IGA didn't receive the minimum required survey sample size to feature in this category in 2021.

Chicken Drumsticks – ALDI

ALDI took out the top spot in the chicken drumsticks stakes, leading the way from Coles in second place, and Woolworths in third. IGA didn't receive the minimum required survey sample size to feature in this category in 2021.

Chicken Roast – ALDI

ALDI roasted its main rival supermarket chains to rate best for cold chicken roasts in 2021, with a clean five-star sweep across the board. Woolworths also got full marks for freshness and taste, while Coles received four stars in most categories and three stars for value for money. IGA didn't receive the minimum required survey sample size to feature in this category.

Lamb Award Winner – Coles & ALDI

Coles and ALDI 'meat' in the middle as joint winners of Canstar Blue's Most Satisfied Customer Award for lamb in 2021. This is a fourth consecutive win for ALDI.

Lamb Cutlets ─ Coles

The lamb cutlets award went to Coles which scored five stars in all categories, including taste, freshness, value for money, and overall customer satisfaction. Woolworths finished behind on three stars overall. ALDI and IGA didn't receive the minimum required survey sample size to feature in this category for 2021.

Lamb Chops ─ ALDI

The title of best lamb chops goes to ALDI for the fourth year in a row – a clear winner ahead of Coles and Woolworths in second and third place respectively. ALDI took out top marks in every research category, as did Coles for taste and freshness. IGA didn't receive the minimum required survey sample size to feature in this category.

Lamb Mince – Coles

Coles was rated best for lamb mince, with five-star reviews for taste, freshness, value for money and overall satisfaction, while Woolworths got full marks for taste and a solid four stars everywhere. ALDI and IGA didn't receive the minimum required survey sample size to feature in this category.

Lamb Roast ─ ALDI

ALDI was rated best for lamb roast, with five-star reviews for taste, freshness, value for money and overall satisfaction. Coles and Woolworths finished in second and third place respectively, with four stars for overall satisfaction. IGA didn't receive the minimum required survey sample size to feature in this category in 2021.

Pork Award Winner – ALDI

ALDI was also rated best pork on your fork for the fourth year running in 2021.

Pork Sausages – ALDI

Australian consumers have ranked ALDI No.1 for pork sausages in 2021, clearly leading the way for overall satisfaction and in all other variables ahead of Coles in second position and Woolworths in third. IGA didn't receive the minimum required survey sample size to feature in this category.

Pork Chops – ALDI

Pork chop night belongs to ALDI, scoring top marks in all research categories, including that of overall customer satisfaction. Woolworths and Coles ranked second and third, with full marks for taste and four stars for overall satisfaction. IGA didn't receive the minimum required survey sample size to feature in this category in 2021.

Pork Mince – ALDI

In 2021, ALDI stood out in the pork mince category, with five stars for taste, freshness, value for money and overall satisfaction. Coles finished with a solid four stars for overall satisfaction and Woolworths with three stars overall. IGA didn't receive the minimum required survey sample size to feature in this category.

Pork Roast ─ ALDI

Aussies rated ALDI's pork roast a 'crackling' success for three years in a row, with the discount supermarket earning five stars across the board. Coles and Woolworths finished second and third respectively, with Coles also receiving full marks for freshness and value for money. IGA didn't receive the minimum required survey sample size to feature in this category in 2021.

Fish Award Winner – ALDI

Fish – ALDI

ALDI was deemed the best catch for fish for the second year in a row. The discount supermarket chain scored five-star reviews for taste, freshness, value for money and overall satisfaction. Meanwhile, Woolworths and Coles came in second and third respectively on four stars overall. Costco rounded up the scores on three stars overall. IGA didn't receive the minimum required survey sample size to feature in this category in 2021.

Seafood Award Winner – ALDI & Coles

Making it 18 awards out of 23, ALDI also picked up the title for best seafood, alongside Coles. Both supermarkets rated five stars for overall satisfaction and taste, while ALDI also received top marks for value for money and Coles for freshness. Woolworths finished third with four stars for overall satisfaction, followed by Costco on three stars.

Finding good quality meat on a budget

"The quality and price of meat products in-store plays a significant role in where many Aussies choose to do their supermarket shopping," said Head of Canstar Blue, Megan Doyle. "But it's also an area where consumers will cut back if they need to save money, so they'll want to know that they're getting the best they can for what they can afford.

"The purpose of our research was to determine which supermarket consumers should consider going to if the quality of the meat on offer is one of the main motivations for where they shop.

"While Coles and Woolworths have performed well in some areas, ALDI's dominance in these ratings is clear. The trend is that consumers who buy their meat products at ALDI generally believe they're getting better bang for their buck."

About this research

Canstar Blue surveyed more than 6,000 Australian adults across a range of categories to measure and track customer satisfaction, via ISO 26362 accredited research panels managed by Qualtrics. The outcomes reported are the results from customers within the survey group who have purchased and eaten a supermarket homebrand meat product (i.e. steak, mince, cutlets, etc.) from a supermarket in the last four weeks (note: this refers to supermarkets' own brand products, not name-brand products purchased in a supermarket and not products purchased from an independent butcher, deli, farmers' market, etc) – in this case, 6,010 people.

Brands must have received at least 30 responses to be included. Results are comparative and it should be noted that brands receiving three stars have still achieved a satisfaction measure of at least six out of 10. Not all brands available in the market have been compared in this survey. The ratings table is first sorted by star ratings and then by mean overall satisfaction. A rated brand may receive a 'N/A' (Not Applicable) rating if it does not receive the minimum number of responses for that criteria.
